Protecting Marine and Offshore Steel Assets with Liquimix Tufflon-D60

Protect marine and offshore steel structures with Liquimix Tufflon-D60, a flexible polyurea coating designed for demanding steel protection applications.

Introduction: What Are Marine and Offshore Steel Structures?

Marine and offshore steel structures are steel components and infrastructure designed for use in or around marine environments. These can include offshore pylons, platforms, decks, supports, and other structural steel exposed to moisture, salt spray and changing environmental conditions.

Because these structures are exposed to demanding conditions, protecting the steel from corrosion, abrasion and environmental wear is an important part of maintaining their condition and serviceability.

The Challenges for Marine and Offshore Structures

Steel structures in marine environments can be exposed to:

  • Moisture and salt spray: Regular exposure to water and marine conditions can contribute to steel corrosion.
  • Abrasion and impact: Equipment, debris and physical contact can cause wear and damage to protective coatings.

  • Movement: Thermal expansion, contraction and structural movement can place stress on rigid coatings and increase the risk of cracking.

A suitable protective coating needs to provide a continuous barrier while also accommodating the movement and physical demands of the structure.

The Liquimix Tufflon-D60 Solution:

Tufflon-D60 is a pure polyurea elastomer designed for a range of industrial and structural applications, including marine structures and offshore pylons.

When applied to properly prepared and abrasive-blasted steel, Tufflon-D60 forms a seamless, flexible protective membrane. Its combination of adhesion, abrasion resistance and high elongation makes it suitable for applications where the coating needs to withstand physical wear and accommodate substrate movement.

Tufflon-D60 is a 100% solids, zero-VOC spray-applied coating that cures rapidly after application.

Key Benefits
  • Direct-to-steel application: Can be applied to suitably prepared, abrasive-blasted steel.
  • Seamless protection: Creates a continuous membrane without conventional coating joints.
  • Abrasion resistance: Helps protect the substrate from mechanical wear and physical contact.
  • High elongation: Allows the coating to accommodate movement of the underlying substrate.
  • Low water absorption: Helps limit moisture uptake by the coating.
  • 100% solids and zero VOCs: Provides a solvent-free coating formulation.
Application Considerations:

Proper surface preparation and application are important to achieving the expected performance of any polyurea coating system. Tufflon-D60 is applied using plural-component spray equipment, and steel substrates should be appropriately abrasive blasted and prepared before coating.

The suitability of Tufflon-D60 for a particular marine or offshore application will depend on factors such as the substrate, environmental exposure, surface preparation, coating thickness and project requirements. For specific applications, the Liquimix technical team can help determine the appropriate coating approach.
