Class III Waterproofing Overview
A Class III waterproofing membrane is a membrane classification, not a waterproofing system. In accordance with the applicable classification requirements, Class III refers to a high-extensibility membrane with an elongation at break of 300% or greater. While high extensibility allows the membrane to accommodate movement within its design parameters, elongation performance alone does not determine the suitability of a membrane for every waterproofing application.
What is a Class III Waterproofing Membrane?
Membrane classification provides a standard framework for categorising waterproofing materials according to their physical properties and mechanical performance. Elongation at break is a key measure of a membrane’s ability to stretch before rupture, providing an indication of its extensibility.
In practical terms, high extensibility indicates that a membrane can undergo significant elongation before rupture. However, selecting an appropriate waterproofing solution requires more than evaluating elongation alone. Overall performance depends on the specific project requirements, substrate conditions, joint detailing and applicable Australian standards and specifications.
Class III for Concrete Applications
For suitably prepared concrete substrates, the following Liquimix product configurations may be specified according to project requirements and specifications:
- Configuration 1: Civilox LV100 → Civilox LV100 & Broadcast Renderfill F300 → Elaston W80
- Configuration 2: Civilox LV100 → Civilox HB200 → Elaston W80
- Configuration 3: Civilox LV100 → Civilox LV100 & Renderfill F300 screed → Elaston W80
The Liquimix Approach
Selecting the appropriate configuration depends on the condition of the concrete substrate, project requirements and specified application criteria. Liquimix focuses on appropriate configuration selection, thorough substrate preparation and compliance with relevant product and project specifications to support reliable membrane performance.
Typical Application Process
Application sequences should follow the project specifications and the latest Liquimix technical documentation. A typical workflow includes:
- Concrete Substrate Assessment & Preparation: Assess the concrete substrate for condition, cleanliness and surface profile, and prepare it as specified before application.
- Application of Civilox LV100: Apply Civilox LV100 to the prepared concrete substrate in accordance with the specified application requirements.
- Application of Civilox LV100 & Broadcast Renderfill F300: Apply Civilox LV100 and broadcast Renderfill F300 into the designated layer in accordance with the specified application procedure.
- Application of Elaston W80: Apply Elaston W80 over the prepared substrate to form a continuous waterproofing membrane.
- Inspection & Quality Control: Inspect the completed application for continuity and overall quality in accordance with the project specifications and applicable quality control requirements.
- Completion & Protection: Allow the membrane to cure as specified and provide any required protection in accordance with the project requirements.
Note: For the exact application sequence and specific procedures for Civilox LV100 and broadcast Renderfill F300, refer to the latest Liquimix Technical Data Sheets (TDS) and project specifications.
Key Benefits
- High Extensibility: Class III membranes have an elongation at break of 300% or greater under the applicable classification requirements.
- Continuous Coverage: Liquid-applied membrane technology can provide continuous coverage across suitably prepared substrates.
- Concrete Configurations: Multiple Liquimix product configurations are available for specified concrete applications.
- Movement Accommodation: High extensibility can help accommodate expected substrate movement within the design parameters of the membrane.
- Configuration Selection: Different product configurations can be selected according to substrate conditions, project requirements and specifications.
Typical Application Areas
Suitable application areas depend on the project specification, substrate conditions and selected Liquimix configuration. Consult Liquimix technical representatives and relevant project documentation to confirm application suitability.
Technical Note
Class III classification relates to membrane extensibility and does not, by itself, determine suitability for every waterproofing application. Always refer to the latest Liquimix Technical Data Sheet (TDS), project specifications and applicable Australian requirements.
