Concrete Rooftop Waterproofing Systems

Explore Liquimix concrete rooftop waterproofing systems, from surface preparation to UV-stable topcoats, for seamless protection against water ingress.

Concrete Rooftop Waterproofing: A Complete Protection System

Exposed concrete rooftops face constant environmental stress. Sun, rain, thermal expansion, and natural building movement can all affect the integrity of the substrate over time. Because concrete is naturally porous, unsealed or inadequately protected roof decks can allow water ingress, potentially leading to internal damage, surface degradation, and costly repairs.

Waterproofing a concrete rooftop requires more than simply applying a single surface coating. Effective protection depends on an engineered, multi-layer system in which each component serves a dedicated purpose from sealing the substrate through to providing long-term UV protection.

Liquimix provides a structured, high-performance coating system designed to seal, waterproof, and protect concrete rooftop surfaces. By combining specialised epoxy primers, hybrid polyurea membranes, and UV-stable topcoats, this complete system approach is designed to help address moisture ingress while providing a durable, clean, and professional finish.

Why a System Approach Matters?

A single product cannot address every challenge an exposed rooftop presents. Moisture within the concrete, adhesion requirements, substrate movement, and ongoing exposure to sunlight can each require different material properties and performance characteristics.

Using a defined, multi-layer coating system helps ensure that each layer performs a specific role as part of the overall waterproofing system:

  • Substrate Sealing: Seals the prepared concrete surface to help minimise porosity, pinholing, and moisture-related issues.
  • Adhesion Preparation: Provides a suitable surface and mechanical key between the epoxy seal coat and subsequent membrane layers.
  • Seamless Waterproofing: Forms a thick, continuous and flexible barrier designed to resist liquid water ingress across the roof area.
  • UV-Stable Decorative Protection: Helps protect the underlying elastomeric membrane from UV exposure while providing a durable, attractive surface finish.

How the Liquimix System Works

The Liquimix concrete rooftop waterproofing system follows a structured, sequential coating process: Prepare → Seal → Promote Adhesion → Waterproof → Protect.

1. Concrete Surface Preparation

Before any coating is applied, the concrete substrate should be mechanically prepared to achieve a profile between CSP 2 and CSP 5 (Concrete Surface Profile), as specified for the system. Proper surface preparation removes contaminants, laitance, and weak surface material, helping create a suitable surface for coating adhesion.

2. Sealing the Substrate

Civilox-LV100 epoxy is applied to the prepared concrete surface. Its low-viscosity formulation helps seal the concrete surface and provides a suitable foundation for the subsequent system layers.

3. Promoting Inter-coat Adhesion

During application of the second sealer coat, Renderfill-F300 sand is seeded into the wet epoxy. The broadcast aggregate creates a textured surface that helps improve mechanical adhesion between the cured epoxy layer and the subsequent waterproofing membrane.

4. Seamless Waterproofing Application

Once the epoxy sealer and broadcast aggregate have cured, Hybron-H90 hybrid polyurea is applied at a minimum thickness of 2 mm. The material forms a continuous, seamless waterproofing membrane designed to provide protection across the prepared roof surface.

5. UV-Stable Topcoat Protection

To help protect the waterproofing membrane from weathering and UV exposure, Opalon-S30 is applied over the cured Hybron-H90 at a minimum thickness of 75 µm. Opalon- S30 provides a UV-stable decorative topcoat that completes the system and contributes to the long-term protection of the underlying membrane.

Key Benefits of the System

  • Seamless Waterproofing: Hybron-H90 forms a continuous membrane without sheet joints or laps, helping provide consistent waterproofing across the prepared roof surface.
  • Enhanced Mechanical Adhesion: The Renderfill-F300 sand-seed stage between the Civilox-LV100 sealer and Hybron-H90 membrane creates a textured surface to help improve mechanical inter-coat adhesion.
  • Dedicated UV Protection: The Opalon-S30 topcoat provides UV-stable protection over the waterproofing membrane while delivering a durable, decorative rooftop finish.
  • Structured Layering: Each component has a defined role within the system, providing a clear and sequential application process from prepared concrete substrate through to the final protective coat.

Who Is This System For?

Engineers & Specifiers

Provides a clearly defined, coordinated system for concrete rooftop coating and waterproofing projects. The system approach brings substrate preparation, sealing, membrane application, and UV-stable topcoating together in a structured sequence, helping engineers and specifiers understand how each stage contributes to the overall system.

Contractors & Applicators

Provides a clear, practical application sequence based on the defined system design. The Renderfill-F300 sand-seed stage creates a textured surface to help improve mechanical adhesion when applying the Hybron-H90 hybrid polyurea membrane over the epoxy sealer.

Building & Facility Owners

Provides a clear understanding of how the rooftop waterproofing system is structured. Owners can see the purpose of each layer—from sealing the prepared concrete substrate through to the final decorative, UV-stable topcoat.

Application & System Considerations

Successful rooftop waterproofing relies on appropriate substrate evaluation and suitable environmental conditions during application. Factors such as concrete moisture content, ambient temperature, surface preparation, and detailing around penetrations and other roof features should be assessed before installation.

Compliance & Technical Note:

Substrate assessment, surface preparation, ambient application conditions, and project-specific requirements should be evaluated by appropriately qualified and experienced coating professionals. Always verify the system specification, required surface profile, and application details against current Liquimix technical documentation before commencing work.
