Epoxy Flake Flooring

Flake is made from specially formulated polymer paint aggregates and is used to enhance the aesthetic and ergonomic quality of resinous flooring systems. Flake is available in two types: Vinyl and Acrylic. Standard Acrylic Flakes are easy to use and bonds exceptionally well with epoxies and clear coatings. Vinyl Flakes are better for solvent based materials as it won’t bend under solvent influence. Vinyl Flake options are available in a wide variety of both colour and size to complement any space.

FAQs

Is it possible to apply epoxy over existing floor coatings?
In some cases, yes, but it depends on the condition, adhesion, and type of the existing coating. If the current coating is well-bonded, compatible with epoxy, and in good condition, a new coat may be applied after light abrasion and cleaning. However, if the existing coating is peeling, contaminated, or chemically incompatible, full removal is recommended before applying a new epoxy floor coating. Applying epoxy over a compromised surface is a common cause of delamination.
Can epoxy floor coatings be applied outdoors?
Standard epoxy coatings are not recommended for outdoor use as they are prone to yellowing and chalking when exposed to UV light. For exterior applications, polyaspartic or polyurethane topcoats are typically preferred as they offer greater UV stability and flexibility across temperature changes. That said, some epoxy systems can be used outdoors when paired with a UV-resistant topcoat.
How do I prepare a concrete floor before applying epoxy?
Surface preparation is the most critical step in any epoxy floor coating application. Concrete must be clean, dry, and free of contaminants, including oils, dust, existing coatings, and curing compounds. Any cracks, joints, or surface defects should be repaired using a suitable concrete epoxy or gap filler prior to coating. Skipping or rushing this stage is the leading cause of epoxy delamination and premature failure. Concrete epoxy suppliers and applicators will generally recommend achieving a CSP (concrete surface profile) of 2–3 for most coating systems.
What is the difference between epoxy and polyurethane floor coatings?
Epoxy and polyurethane are both popular floor coating systems, but they perform differently. Epoxy coatings are typically harder and more rigid, offering excellent chemical and abrasion resistance, making them well-suited for industrial floors, warehouses, and manufacturing plants. Polyurethane coatings are more flexible, UV-stable, and better suited to environments where thermal cycling or outdoor exposure are factors. Many high-performance flooring systems combine both.
How long do epoxy floor coatings typically last?
When properly applied and maintained, epoxy floor coatings generally last between 5 and 10 years in commercial and industrial settings. Longevity depends on several factors, including surface preparation quality, the type of epoxy system used, traffic load, and exposure to chemicals or UV light. Industrial environments with heavy machinery or chemical spills may require recoating sooner, while low-traffic commercial spaces can see significantly longer performance. Sourcing materials from reputable epoxy floor coating suppliers and ensuring correct installation are the two biggest factors in maximising lifespan.
What types of epoxy floor coatings are available?
Epoxy floor coatings come in several formulations, each suited to different environments and performance requirements. The most common types include self-levelling epoxy (ideal for smooth, seamless finishes in warehouses and commercial spaces), mortar epoxy (for heavy-duty industrial floors requiring extra thickness and impact resistance), anti-static epoxy (used in electronics manufacturing and sensitive environments), and epoxy terrazzo (a decorative option popular in retail and hospitality settings). Speaking with an experienced epoxy supplier or epoxy floor coating manufacturer will help identify the right system for your specific application.
How long does epoxy concrete paint last?
With proper surface preparation and correct application, epoxy concrete paint can last 5 to 10 years or more. Its lifespan depends on factors like traffic levels, exposure to chemicals, and environmental conditions. In industrial settings, regular maintenance can help extend the durability of the coating.
Can epoxy paint be applied to old concrete floors?
Yes, epoxy paint can be applied to old concrete floors, provided the surface is properly cleaned and prepared. This typically involves removing contaminants, repairing cracks, and mechanically profiling the surface to ensure good adhesion. Once prepared, epoxy coatings can restore and protect worn concrete floors effectively.
How is epoxy paint different from regular floor paint?
Unlike regular paint, epoxy paint chemically bonds to the concrete surface and cures into a hard, impact-resistant finish. It’s thicker, more durable, and offers superior resistance to chemicals, abrasions, and moisture. Epoxy also lasts significantly longer than traditional floor paints, especially in high-traffic or industrial environments.
What is epoxy concrete paint used for?
Epoxy concrete paint is used to protect and enhance concrete floors in industrial, commercial, and residential settings. It creates a durable, chemical-resistant surface that can handle heavy traffic, machinery, and spills. It's commonly applied in warehouses, garages, workshops, retail spaces, and anywhere a strong, low-maintenance finish is needed.
