HYBRON-H90 | CASE STUDY CS-009

CS-009 | Concrete Rooftop Application

Project Overview

Waterproofing concrete rooftops is crucial for preventing structural damage and ensuring the longevity of buildings. Rooftops are frequently exposed to many environmental factors, including UV, frequent rain, high humidity, and temperature fluctuations.

This case study outlines the waterproofing process undertaken for an external concrete rooftop at a commercial facility. The project involved the application of Hybron®-H90, a hybrid polyurea membrane, followed by an Opalon-S30 UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat.

The required system needed to ensure long-lasting waterproofing, enhanced durability, and aesthetic appeal, meeting both functional and design requirements.

The Solution

The concrete surface was thoroughly cleaned to remove debris, oils, pre-existing coatings and other loose contaminants to achieve a concrete surface preparation of CSP 2 - 5. After suitable surface preparation, Civilox-LV100 epoxy primer was applied to seal and prime the concrete surface. A second (sand-seeded) coat of Civilox-LV100 mixed with Renderfill-F300 (fine sand) was applied to improve the adhesion of the Hybron®-H90 membrane to the concrete. The Hybron®-H90 was sprayed at 3,000μm DFT, achieving a complete, even coverage of the concrete surface, providing waterproofing and resistance to environmental stresses.

After the Hybron®-H90 membrane had cured, Opalon-S30 polyaspartic was spray-applied at a minimum thickness of 75μm. A final coat of Opalon-S30 with Renderfill-F300 broadcasted to a minimum thickness of 100μm was required to produce an anti-slip finish. The Opalon-S30 provided a visually appealing top coat while enhancing UV stability and slip resistance, ensuring aesthetic appeal and functionality.

The Result

The combined system of Hybron®-H90 and Opalon-S30 successfully created a waterproof barrier, preventing water ingress and protecting the structural integrity of the rooftop. The elastomeric properties of Hybron-H90 offered significant resistance to thermal expansion and weather conditions, ensuring longevity. The final Opalon-S30 topcoat provided a bright, glossy finish, enhancing the visual aspects of the rooftop and contributing to the overall design of the facility.

The project demonstrated the effectiveness of using a hybrid polyurea-polyurethane membrane (Hybron®-H90) combined with a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat (Opalon-S30) for waterproofing a concrete rooftop. This solution not only addressed the waterproofing needs but also provided durability and aesthetic value. The systems’ fast curing time offered reduced downtime, resulting in a faster return-to-service. Hybron®-H90 provided a reliable solution that gave an expected service life of 20+ years.

The successful application led to a satisfied client, and set a benchmark for future waterproofing projects within similar environments. For the first time in years the client has not had any leaks or water ingress, they are “Over the Moon with this application.” For these reasons and many more, Hybron-H90 is the superior hybrid waterproof membrane for rooftop applications.
